Data Bank for Stranding Dolphins and Whales

Dolphin hunting is forbidden as seafood law, article 1380. But the fishing nets that using for sturgeon, sword-fish and turbot hunting are threatening dolphins in the Black Sea. Also this nets threatening caretta carettas and monk seals. 3000 Mutur (Phocoena phocoena) and 1000-1500 Afalina (Tursiops truncatus) are dying per annum because of fishing in the Black Sea. 3 whales and 20 dolphins death in 1996 because of extension nets in the Mediterranean Sea. It may be more. But we don't have a strong data.

Therefore, we planned to make up a data bank for stranded cetacean on Turkish coastline between Hopa and Iskenderun. We will invite veterinaries, voluntaries and regional specialists of agriculture and we will organize meetings for instruct on first aid for stranding cetacean and autopsy. We suggest the Marmara Sea for pilot area at first. We started the "monitoring and protection project on dolphins and whales which living in Turkish seas" for presentation the problems. We planned to distribute topical posters and postcards to related establishment and people.

Developments on Monitoring and Protection Project for Cetacean

Permanence of cetacean generation in the Turkish seas connected to protection their living space, stocks of species, their dispersion and biology.

Therefore, within the project on monitoring and protection for cetacean that living in the Turkish seas, organized a meeting for make up a data bank on April 17, 1998 in Istanbul by TUDAV. Participants of he first meeting are statesmen, universities and fishermen.

The fishermen invited from the Mediterranean, Aegean, Marmara and Black Sea regions made presentations on their regions. They carved out an agreed strategy on monitoring and protection of cetaceans in this meeting. Also, various fishery problems in these regions debated in this meeting.
