Thank you all for coming to ECS 2009 Istanbul!
Hope you enjoyed the conference and your stay in Istanbul.
See you in Stralsund next year!
Dear colleagues of the European Cetacean Society, The 23rd Annual Conference of the European Cetacean Society will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, on 2-4 March 2009, and will be hosted by Turkish Marine Research Foundation (Türk Deniz Araştırmaları Vakfı: TÜDAV in short). |
The theme of the 2009 conference is: CLIMATE CHANGE AND MARINE MAMMALSClimate change is a major concern all over the world both on land and at sea and there is increasing evidence of negative effects of climate change on biodiversity. In the case of marine mammals there are few clear cut examples of negative effects of climate change, and these are mainly from the Arctic and Antarctic. However, such effects are widely predicted and there is a good deal of published information about how climatic variation impacts in various ways upon marine mammal populations, for example through effects on their breeding habitat or food supplies, from which effects of directional climatic change can be inferred. During the 2009 Conference, we hope to learn more about current findings on this issue and to further discuss threats facing marine mammals. Since Turkey is situated between Asia and Europe, East and West, facing both the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea, we would like to invite contributions relating to marine mammals of this region, on topics such as:
Conference Organizing CommitteeBayram Öztürk (Chair) Scientific CommitteeGraham Pierce (Chair) About TÜDAV Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TÜDAV) was established in 1997 to conduct researches on marine science, to protect marine life, and to introduce marine culture and love for seas especially to future generations in Turkey. The foundation carries out various researches and courses on the current problems related to pollution, marine biodiversity, sustainable fisheries, marine protected areas, marine law and policies. The foundation has been supported by various national/international organizations such as UNEP, UNDP and EU, as well as private sectors to carry out its projects. Some of our projects are; Education for responsible fisheries, Research on dolphins and whales (interactions with fisheries including bycatch, strandings, cetacean migration observation in Istanbul Strait (photo-id), genetic analyses, skull and bones collections, stomach contents analyses, and conservation strategies), Ballast water control, Turkish Straits databank, Gökçeada Marine Park, Continental shelf studies, Research on Mediterranean Monk Seal, Preserving the marine environment of Ölüdeniz Lagoon, Biological invasion, Oil pollution monitoring. TÜDAV has published about 40 books so far on such topics as above and organized several national/international workshops and symposia. |
