Our coastline still possesses untouched beauty.

Millions of organisms gather at the shores to feed and ensure the survival of the species. Lagoons and estuaries offer suitable habitats for them. The sand under our feet is full of small creatures though we cannot see them. The Black Sea still yields anchovies, though not many anymore. Some fish continue to migrate through th Çanakkale and Istanbul Straits. Monk seals are still seen in the Black Sea, though rarely. There are even some otters. Playful dolphins still greet us from the deep blue. When we look into the underwater world, we can see all forms of life with incredible beauty. The Poseidon seagrass beds offer shelter to juvenile fishes and invertebrates. Underwater caves in the Aegean and Mediterranean have colorful habitants, lobsters, moray eels, octopus... The fate of all these life, big and small, depends totally on our determination. That is, we have to know the sea and marine ecosystem to implement efficient conservation measures. If not, these riches will continue to diminish.

TURKISH MARINE RESEARCH FOUNDATION (DENİZ VAKFI)

DENİZ VAKFI was founded in 1996 by a group of researchers, maritime workestar.JPG (90210 bytes)rs and nature lovers, in order to enhance marine research, education and environmental protection in Turkey. Although Turkey is bordered on three sided by Black Sea, Aegean Sea and Mediterranean, not enough is known at present about them to provide a basis for the development of efficient protection measures or that of utilization. The major purpose of DENİZ VAKFI is therefore to collect scientific information and thereby develop our understanding of our marine environment.
