COMMUNITY AWARENESS AND CONSERVATION ENHANCEMENT PROJECT AT GÖKÇEADA MARINE PARK
Characterized by its hard seabed encompassing extensive Posidonia seagrass meadows along with macroalgal and coralline communities, Gökçeada Marine Park was established in 1999 through the efforts of TÜDAV (Turkish Marine Environment Protection Foundation) in recognition of its aesthetic and ecological values. The park attracts approximately 7,000 tourists annually during the summer months (June-September) for sunbathing, swimming, and recreational fishing. Since 1999, TÜDAV has conducted numerous conservation and monitoring activities, both voluntary and donation-supported; however, these activities have not been able to maintain their continuity due to budget constraints. Currently, TÜDAV, together with its French partner BiEAUdiversité (CSD-ENV within the framework of the Civil Society Dialogue Program), has launched a new project jointly funded by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey. The project aims to establish on-site management of the park, raise public awareness of marine biodiversity and environmental protection through educational materials, and establish an underwater park. Once a permanent facility is in place, it will welcome visitors and display educational materials. The underwater park will not only provide visitors with an eco-tourism activity but also offer them the experience of observing local biodiversity with expert guidance. Park rangers will monitor activities in the area and guide visitors to ensure they can benefit from the conservation area in a sustainable way.
