Türkiye's Antarctic Research Expedition
Press Release: 7 Universities and TÜBİTAK Set Out for Collaboration in the White Continent
Istanbul, March 14, 2016
A 14-person research team consisting of representatives from Istanbul University, Istanbul Technical University, Erciyes University, Çanakkale 18 Mart University, Marmara University, Kocaeli University, Çukurova University, and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) will set off for the white continent on March 29, 2016.
Academics from seven Turkish universities conducting research on polar studies, along with TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye), will conduct research in a 50-mile area of ??Antarctica. The team, comprised of medical doctors, botanists, surveyors, geological engineers, and marine science specialists, will spend 15 days conducting research on climate change, glaciers, invasive species, pollution, marine biodiversity, protected areas, marine mammals, and botany. Two female academics are also part of the team. This expedition marks the first steps in a long-term collaboration on the continent, initiated through an agreement signed last year between the Ukrainian National Antarctic Science Centre (NASC), ITU-PolReC, and the Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TÜDAV). This expedition also marks the first joint expedition of Turkish universities to the continent.
Turkish scientists, who have been working with international scientific institutions on polar research, gained a scientific umbrella organization with the establishment of the ITU Polar Research Center (Turkish Polar Research Center, PolReC) in 2015. Many Turkish academics both domestically and internationally support the project. The center also serves as a point of contact for academics wishing to conduct research on the polar regions and a platform for discussing scientific programs.
Expedition leader Prof. Dr. Bayram Öztürk (Istanbul University) stated, "Turkish academics have been working on polar regions since 1977. These valuable academics are currently members of the PolReC Advisory Board. We have completed preparations for our first expedition, which is a milestone for the start of our joint studies that we have been planning for many years. We are setting off with a plan of at least three years in cooperation with valuable scientists from Ukraine. I believe that Türkiye will make very important scientific contributions to the White Continent, and being the leader of this first expedition is also a source of pride for me."
