THE WORKSHOP ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE PRESERVATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IN Türkiye WAS SUCCESSFULLY HELD.
Final declaration
The first meeting in Türkiye on the topic of climate change and its impact on cultural heritage was held on October 6th in Urla/Izmir. The meeting consisted of two sessions, with six presentations in addition to the opening speeches. The presentations fostered interdisciplinary collaboration.
a) Increasing pollution in our seas negatively impacts underwater cultural heritage. Therefore, local authorities and relevant ministries are expected to be more sensitive and attentive to the protection of underwater heritage in the seas and coastal areas.
b) Increased acidification as a result of climate change may negatively impact cultural heritage.
c) A national action plan should be created to prevent cultural heritage in Türkiye's lakes, rivers, coasts, and seas from being negatively affected by climate change. All stakeholders should be included in this plan, and solutions to the problem should be developed through collective wisdom.
d) Due to the scattered, incomplete, and weak data on this subject, it has been decided that a new meeting will be held on the Black Sea coast next year to address all aspects of the problem. This will allow the issue of data deficiency to be re-examined.
e) Ankara University's work on underwater archaeology is commendable. However, to address the shortcomings in this area, the establishment of an interdisciplinary working group is essential. The relevant ministries should also participate in this working group.
f) Cultural heritage submerged underwater is most threatened, and even destroyed, by humankind. Official institutions lack expert personnel to prevent this negativity. Training expert personnel through various educational programs is of paramount importance. Furthermore, haphazard construction activities underwater hinder natural circulation, negatively impacting cultural heritage. In addition, the construction of modern ports and marinas in bays where ancient port cities were located is destroying archaeological structures. Moreover, fishing with nets in these areas causes widespread destruction and the disappearance of historical artifacts. Taking measures in these areas is crucial for the protection of underwater cultural heritage.

In our country, there are very few studies on the impact of climate change on the marine environment and on cultural heritage located in and around the sea. In this workshop, we aim to create a critical working group by bringing together experts in this field, in partnership with two NGOs dedicated to the sea and Ankara University. Climate change is becoming increasingly prominent on the global agenda. We will seek answers to many questions such as: How will climate change and rising sea levels affect our seas and the cultural heritage on our coasts? What should we do? Which institutions need to cooperate at the national level? Furthermore, the workshop aims to create a common platform for scientists to collaborate on projects.
