The warming of the Mediterranean is being monitored.
The Mediterranean Scientific Commission's Tropical Signal Program monitors the tropicalization of the Mediterranean. The program, involving 21 scientists from 15 countries bordering the Mediterranean, aims to monitor the impact of global warming on Mediterranean biodiversity using reliable and sustainable data. Long-term data loggers have been installed at selected measurement stations. This data, along with information on species sensitive to temperature changes in these areas, will be recorded.
The scientific objectives of the program are:
The objectives of this study include: determining the replacement of native cold-water species by native or foreign warm-loving species; identifying their geographical distribution and distribution depth;
determining mass or species-specific mortality and outbreaks of marine organisms;
and determining the relationship between changes in the distribution of organisms and hydroclimatic conditions in situ.
To achieve these objectives, micro data loggers were placed at depths of 5 to 35 meters along the Mediterranean coast to profile seawater temperature in the coastal region of the Mediterranean.

In our country, the Turkish Marine Research Foundation is responsible for the program. The team, led by Prof. Dr. B. Öztürk, installed data collection units in Hatay, Bodrum, and Gökçeada in 2011 and began data recording. This study, planned to last a total of five years, also includes plans to install data collectors in the Marmara Sea and the Black Sea as part of the project's development.
